Thank you for sharing. You made some excellent points, I need to think of my writing as a business and get on that side of things, often just feels so overwhelming these days.
The trick is figuring out why it feels overwhelming, and that’s a question only you can answer.
If you’re writing partly for economic reasons, then yes, you probably want to view it more as a business, but if I were you, I’d figure out what makes it feel overwhelming first. You don’t want to burn yourself out. Sometimes, that means adjusting your writing (and any related business activities) to fit comfortably in the time you have available. Maybe writing is a part-time job for you rather than a full-time job, and that’s okay. There’s more than one way to take this journey.
Might have to really sit down and think about it. I enjoy writing, but would also live to get a story out into the world, so lots to think about and plan. Thank you :)
Well done, Bill! You sharing from your experience as a writer and the satisfaction you receive from the writing rather from the external rewards is crucial to staying positive. An author can create something they are pleased with creating but how the world receives it is not in our control. But loving what you do is probably the best way to create something others will love to read.
What a fantastic video, thank you for the little pep talk and background info on yourself. Definitely looking into getting a book, I hadn’t even realized you had so many. That’s exciting.
Great points, and I’m glad to say that I feel as if my goals have been realistically set. I’m simply grateful to even be writing right now.
you make so many good points here but I think you hit on what's most important - don't lose your love of writing. it's too easy to get caught up in sales numbers or rejections or whatever outside judgment there is of your writing, and you can't let it take the joy of the process and the excitement of holding your own book in your hand (or listening to it on audio, that's my favorite) away from you.
reasonable goals + focus on what you can control = more great advice
